Hey friends 👀🍪

Let's talk about something that shows up on almost every website we visit — that little pop-up asking us to accept cookies. If you're like me, you've probably just tapped "Accept All" without thinking, just to make it go away. But what do cookies really do?

And why does it feel like the internet knows exactly what we've been browsing?

I did a little digging (and got low-key creeped out), so here's what I found — in simple, non-techy words!

So... what are cookies?

Nope, not the snack kind 🍪

Online cookies are small files that websites leave on your device. They remember your preferences, your login info, what you clicked on, and sometimes… a lot more. It's like digital breadcrumbs that tell the website, "Hey, this person has been here before!"

Why do websites use them?

There are actually some good reasons! Cookies help:

• Keep you logged in

• Remember what's in your shopping cart

• Save your language or region settings

But here's the thing — cookies can also track your behavior across other websites. That's when it gets a bit creepy.

Wait… is that why I see ads for stuff I just searched?

Yup 😳 That's called "tracking cookies." They follow your clicks, searches, and interests, then sell that info to advertisers. So if you searched for sneakers once, expect to see sneaker ads everywhere for the next week. Been there!

Are all cookies bad?

Not at all. Some are super useful and make browsing smoother. But others (especially third-party cookies) are mainly for data collection. They're the ones most people are worried about.

What can we do about it?

Here's what I do to stay a little more private online:

• Only accept essential cookies when I can

• Clear my cookies regularly (check your browser settings)

• Use "Incognito" or "Private" mode when researching sensitive stuff

• Install browser extensions like uBlock or Privacy Badger

It's not about hiding — it's about choosing

I'm not saying we should never accept cookies. Sometimes it makes things easier. But it's good to know what we're agreeing to — instead of just clicking blindly.

Have you ever noticed the internet showing you stuff you were just thinking about? 😅
