Lykkers, have we ever imagined Germany as a place with skyscrapers competing with New York? Frankfurt am Main offers just that — a modern skyline alongside historic streets.
Unlike Berlin or Munich, Frankfurt is Europe's financial hub, and its skyline reflects its global character. From towering glass buildings to historic squares, exploring Frankfurt's skyline is like seeing Germany in a new light.
Skyline Frankfurt City
The skyline is dominated by several iconic buildings:
- Commerzbank Tower – 259 meters tall, designed by Norman Foster. Public entry isn't allowed, but we can admire its unique green terraces from nearby streets.
- Messeturm (Trade Fair Tower) – 257 meters tall, shaped like a pyramid. It's mainly office space, but its exterior is perfect for photos.
- Main Tower – 200 meters, the only skyscraper with a public observation deck. Tickets cost around $9, and it's open daily 10:00–21:00. The view at sunset is unforgettable.
- Westend Tower & Tower 185 – Less known but impressive, they show Frankfurt's mix of architecture.
To experience the skyline fully, we have several options:
1. Main Tower Observation Deck – Take the elevator to the top for panoramic views. Open 10:00–21:00, tickets $9.
2. Eiserner Steg (Iron Footbridge) – Free access, perfect for river reflections, especially at sunrise or sunset.
3. Holbeinsteg Bridge – A quieter spot with a wide view of the financial district.
4. River Cruises on the Main – Tickets $12–$15. Boats depart daily from 10:00 to 18:00, allowing a scenic view of the skyline from the water.
- By Train: Frankfurt Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) is the main hub. From here, we can take the subway (U-Bahn) or tram to reach the city center.
- By Subway/Tram: Lines U1, U2, U4, and U8 reach the financial district.
- By Car: Parking is available near the Main Tower and Römer area, though busy during weekends.
- By Foot/Bike: The skyline is best explored along the Main River Promenade, which connects bridges, parks, and observation spots.
Recommended times to visit Frankfurt include:
- Spring (April–June) – Clear skies, mild weather, flowers along the river.
- Early Autumn (September–October) – Warm days, fewer crowds, and colorful foliage.
- Evening/Night – The buildings light up after dark, offering a magical cityscape. Sunset is the best for photos and short river cruises.
- Golden Hour: One hour after sunrise or before sunset gives the best lighting.
- Bring a Wide-Angle Lens: The skyline is tall; a wide lens captures it fully.
- Tripod for Night Shots: Long exposures make the illuminated buildings look amazing.
- River Reflections: The Main River is perfect for mirror-like shots of the skyline.
While exploring the skyline, we can also visit:
- Römerberg Square & Old Town – A 10-minute walk from the river; cobblestone streets and historic buildings. Free access.
- Museumsufer (Museum Embankment) – Art, architecture, and history museums; tickets $8–$12, some museums free on certain days.
- Goethe House – Explore the life of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe; tickets $12, open 10:00–18:00.
- Bring a Frankfurt Card ($12/day) for unlimited public transport and discounted attraction tickets.
- Avoid weekends if possible — bridges and observation decks get crowded.
- Wear comfortable shoes for walking along riverbanks and cobblestones.
- Check the weather; clear days make the skyline photos outstanding.
